Principle #11:
Complex learning is enhanced by challenge and inhibited by threat associated with helplessness and fatigue

For every human being on the planet, from birth ‘til death, threat tied to fear and helplessness sabotages the most promising kind of learning, including higher order thinking (executive functions).

Relaxed alertness is the ideal mental state for higher order functioning.  Creating an environment that fosters this mental state must be a primary goal for teachers and educators.

Capacity #11:  All students can learn more effectively in a supportive, empowering and challenging environment.
