An example: The brain systems view for teaching reading... Most skills are processed more directly by the motor centers of the brain such as the brain stem and cerebellum. These are areas deeply involved with repetition, practice and rehearsal. In essence the same or similar skill is practiced over and over until mastered. Essential as this is, skills have definable limits and parameters. Comprehension on the other hand involves the frontal lobes in the neocortex. This region is engaged when readers have to use reasoning, abstract thinking, planning or metacognition (the ability to recognize and relate what one reads to onefs own beliefs and actions). Comprehension ultimately develops the capacity for higher order thinking and encourages the development of something called gexecutive functionh. Executive function comes on line after age 12 and requires development of the frontal lobes, areas that deal with abstract thought. |
