Executive Functions - essential, but often ignored functions of the brain

Executive functions are largely housed in the front of the brain in what is called the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is located approximately behind the forehead.

Executive functions of the brain are currently being explored by Elkhonon Goldberg (2001) and others ( LeDoux, 2002; Lyon and Krasnegor, 1987; Molfese and Molfese, 2002; Miller and Cummings, 1999) and Fuster (2003)*.

Individuals with highly developed executive functions have mastered the ability to plan and organize their thinking, use reason, engage in risk assessment, make sense of ideas and behavior, multitask, moderate emotions, work with longer time horizons, think critically, access working memory and reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses.
